The Alpujarras
The Alpujarras
By car, 150 km, 1 dayThis region of medium mountains isolated between the Sierra Nevada and the sea is situated at around 50km from the south of Granada. The tourist area of Lanjaron has a reputation for its mineral water and its 16C castle that offers a superb view over the Guadalfeo valley. Pampaneira village's liberty square is worth the detour, as well as the Moorish-inspired white villages, such as Juviles and Valor (famous for its 16C church in a Mudéjar style).

Lanjarón
Plaza de la Libertad
You reach the church along the main street, lined with shops selling local produce. The Baroque Iglesia de Santa Cruz (Holy Cross) was built in the 17C.
Capileira
The church of Santa María de Gracia was built in the 16C and is certainly one of the most beautiful in the Western Alpujarras (the part of the range near Granada).
The 16C Iglesia de San José was built in the Mudéjar style, which was typical of architecture in the region at the time and which was inspired by Moorish architecture.
The 16C church in the Mudéjar style - executed in the Arab tradition - contains interesting sculptures, including an Ecce Homo and an Immaculate Conception by Alonso Cano (1601-67). The painter, sculptor and architect who lived in Granada during the Golden Age of Spanish painting, is now ranked among Spain's greatest artists.
Town Hall
The town hall is an 18C brick building with a restrained, well-proportioned façade. On the left is a lovely 17C stone fountain called the Pilar de los Cuatro Caños (fountain with four spouts).
