Church of the Assumption : Michelin's recommendations
This church was built in late 16C Gothic style and renovated in Baroque style in the 18C. The entrance is on the right hand side through a beautiful Renaissance doorway. Inside, the three spacious and light naves are covered by groined vaults, the keystones of which are decorated. Above the transept, an egg-shaped cupola rests on pendentives. Prominently displayed in the presbytery is a fine 16C sculpted and painted Mannerist altarpiece. The chapels house several Baroque altarpieces and a figure of Christ attributed to Alonso de Mena. The Chapel of the Sacred Heart, which opens onto the left side aisle, is a masterpiece of Andalucian Baroque art. It is made up of a rectangular vestibule leading into an octagon encircled by an ambulatory. Light contributes a great deal to the almost magical atmosphere of this place and is made more intense by the white walls and ceilings. It floods the centre of the chapel and flows over the exuberant decoration of the plasterwork by a local artist, Francisco Javier Pedrajas. Note the keystone of the large egg-shaped cupola, scattered with small heads. In the lower part, a statue of a saint leans against each pillar. The decoration combines elements of vegetation, rocks and people illustrating scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Despite the profuse decoration, the overall effect is one of lightness and delicacy - a real feast for the eyes!
