Fountains of the King and Health : Michelin's recommendations
These two fountains form a stunning sight. The oldest, the Fountain of Health, is by Francisco del Castillo (16C) and occupies the upper part of the building. It is made up of a mannerist stone frontispiece above a boss wall in the centre of a temple housing the Virgin of Health. The thick vegetation contrasts with the gilded stone and the nearby Fountain of the King adds to the charm of the location. Finished in the early 19C, the Fountain of the King leads us into the gardens of a baroque, as much by its size as by its shape and its curves and counter-curves. It is arranged on three levels and has 139 mouths with lips of gargoyles. The sculpted groups are by Remigio del Mármol: the central group represents the chariot of Neptune and his wife Amphytritus. On the upper level, the lion fighting the snake is by neoclassical sculptor J Álvarez Cubero.
