Costa del Sol to Ronda Road
Costa del Sol to Ronda Road
By car, 69 km, 1 dayJust before San Pedro de Alcántara, the winding A 396 leads away from the lively coastal resorts of the Costa del Sol and Marbella, its cosmopolitan capital. The beaches and tall buildings on the sunny shoreline give way to the valleys, mountains and Spanish firs of the Serrannia de Ronda, with its dizzyingly high town of the same name built over a gorge. And don't forget to enjoy these two sides of Andalusia while savouring a plate of shellfish.

The Iglesia Rupestre de la Virgen de la Cabeza stands on a spur, opposite Ronda with the Guadalevín running down below. The lofty site commands superb views of Ronda.
The heart of the old Moorish town, which was a vibrant quarter until the end of the Arab occupation in 1485, is a delightful labyrinth of picturesque alleyways fronted by museums, such as the Palacio de Mondragón, churches, convents and noble residences. Make sure you visit the 18C Casa del Rey Moro, home to the Forestier gardens and La Mina, a secret staircase that descends directly to the river. The minaret of St Sebastian is all that remains of the 14C Nasrid mosque.
Built in 1785, the arenas are among the oldest and most attractive in Spain and they are the largest in the world with a diameter or of 66 m. The neo-classical, simple interior is divided into two storeys with Tuscan columns topped by a stone balustrade. In the Bullfighting Museum (Museo Taurino) there are some bright garments and many souvenirs and photos invoking the family histories of the bullfighters of Ronda; the Romeros, the Ordóñez.
