Arcos de la Frontera
The keep dominates the upper part of the village from where you can see the neighbouring whitewashed village of Olvera. Higher up the village, a Gothic church, the Iglesia de la Encarnación, is adorned with frescoes far more recent than the church itself, but in a similar style.
The triangular-shaped castle built in the late 12C was part of the Nasrid defence line, set up by the rulers of the Arab dynasty that reigned from Granada. It was taken by King Alfonso XI in 1327.
The originally Moorish castle houses the Tourist Office. From its keep, in the oldest part, there is a magnificent view of the village and the reservoir. Inside, the elegant Renaissance patio has an upper gallery with a balustrade adorned with pointed arches. The patio gives onto one of Bornos's hidden treasures, a 16C garden, one of the earliest Renaissance gardens in Andalucía.
