Abd-er-Rahman III undertook the building of this castle in 960. The castle as it stands today is the result of successive enlargements and changes from the Moslem and Christian eras. From the southern rampart, the view reaches to the Strait of Gibraltar and the Moroccan coast is only 13.5 km away.
