This farming and industrial centre, 32km northeast of Úbeda, has existed since the Bronze Age. The Iglesia de la Asunción (Church of the Assumption) and the impressive Casa de la Inquisición (House of the Inquisition) are worthy of particular note.

The 16C church built by Andrés de Vandelvira, Úbeda's great architect, replaced a castle, three of whose monumental towers remain. The church has three aisles and side chapels covered in oven vaulting.
