It was in the former town of Bobastro that Omar Ben Hafsen, a descendant of a Visigothic nobleman, set up his headquarters. He gathered together a group of rebels to protect the countryfolk from the Ummayad Caliphate in Córdoba (9C-10C), before ending up by embracing the Christian faith. All that remains today are the ruined walls of the alcázar (fortress), and an unfinished 10C church hewn out of the rock. This has a basilican plan and is a strange mixture of architectural influences - Roman, Visigothic and Muslim.
