Ávila Recommended Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

Standing at an altitude of 1 131m, Ávila is Spain's highest provincial capital. The town has two main claims to fame: as the city of Santa Teresa de Jesús (1515-82), one of the greatest mystics of the Roman Catholic Church, whose memory is honoured at many places around the town; and its magnificent fortified walls, which have remained almost intact since the 11C. A sunset walk along the ramparts will be rewarded with wonderful views of the town.
