Baiona : Michelin's recommendations
The vast bay of Baiona lies at the mouth of the Ría de Vigo, between two rocky peninsulas protecting the port: Monte Ferro to the north and Monterreal to the south. It was here, on 10 March 1493, that La Pinta, one of Christopher Columbus' three caravels, came ashore, captained by Martín Alonso Pinzón, the first to declare that the New World had been discovered. The town was a major commercial and maritime centre in the 16C and 17C. Today, Baiena is a bustling resort with a charming old quarter.
