Montjuïc Castle : Michelin's recommendations
It was at the foot of the first Château, built in 1640, that the Catalan troops won the battle of the 26th Jan 1714 against Phillip V. It was rebuilt as it is today in the 18C after being destroyed in the war of Succession, it is a five sided fortress with wide ramparts and small forts. The castle, like the citadel survived until the middle of the 19C. As one of the strategic points in Barcelona's defense system, it was a good place from which to attack the town, as demonstrated by Espartero who in 1842 pointed the cannons against Barcelona. For a long time the castle was used as a military prison and it was there in 1909 that the dictating anarchist Ferre i Guardi, and later the President of the Council, Luis Companys, were shot dead. Rest assured you run no risk of suffering the same plight. This Castle is now a good place for walks and offers exceptional views over the port and the town. In the town, you will also find the Army museum (Museu militar), which offers a variety of arms collections, historical flags and uniforms, situated around the old /iplace d'armes/i.
