It was at the foot of the first Château, built in 1640, that the Catalan troops won the battle of the 26th Jan 1714 against Phillip V. It was rebuilt as it is today in the 18C after being destroyed in the war of Succession, it is a five sided fortress with wide ramparts and small forts. This old strategic point was part of Barcelona's defensive system, and is now a good place for a walk, with exceptional views over the port and the town. Following the restoration work, the castle will be home to an International Centre for Peace, a "Memorial Centre" devoted to the castle's history and an Interpretation Centre of Monjuïc Hill, which will be devoted to the "mountain's" different aspects (geological, nature, human, etc.).
