An important town in the Arán valley during the Middle Ages, Betrén is a short distance from Vielha, and today lives mainly from tourism. The church of San Esteve boasts a distinctive carved doorway illustrative of the building’s transitional style between Romanesque and Gothic, on which sixty realistic human faces evoke the Last Judgement and the Resurrection. Above the doorway arch, the Virgin Mary is depicted holding her child in one hand and a flower in the other.
