Costa Brava : Michelin's recommendations
The Costa Brava, the stretch of Catalan coast that goes from Portbou to Blanes in the province of Girona, needs no introduction. While it is true that the name Wild Coast - deriving from its twisted shoreline, and its inlets and cliffs - seems a little exaggerated today, given the multitude of resorts that have developed and the crowds in summer, the coast is still just as beautiful and is best explored step by step, ideally outside the summer months.Fine beaches, in the Golfo de Roses, around Sant Feliu de Guíxols, the Platja d'Aro and the area around Lloret de Mar (the wildest part) give way to yachting harbours like Empuriabrava or L'Estartit. The coast's seaside attractions combine with the charm of the villages, such as Cadaqués, immortalised by Salvador Dalí, Peratallada, Begur and Tossa de Mar. Inland towns such as Figueres (Figueras), Dalí's birthplace, and the magnificent medieval city of Girona (Gerona) are also hugely rewarding. If you are interested in country holidays, Romanesque architecture and good food, the Olot and Besalú areas are not far away in an unspoilt part of Catalunya.
