Pirineos Catalanes : Michelin's recommendations
The Catalan Pyrenees form a wide unbroken barrier 230km long extending from the Arán Valley as far as the Mediterranean. There are summits over 2 500m high, such as the Pica d'Estats (3 145m) and the Puigmal (2 910m). You will need several days to explore the region but you won't regret your choice as it has something for everyone. History and architecture lovers will adore the Romanesque churches of the Vall de Boí in the abrupt landscapes of the Upper Ripagorce region. They will also appreciate the 12C portal of the Antiguo Monasterio de Santa María at Ripoll and the magnificent Descent from the Cross (1251) kept in the Monasterio de Sant Joan de les Abadesses. Nature lovers will be enthralled by the panoramas visible through the Vall del Noguera Ribagorçana and the Val d'Arán covered in forest, meadows and tiny villages. Other natural attractions include the Upper Valley of the Noguera Pallaresa, the Vall del Segre with the Garganta de Tresponts and the lovely Collado de Bòixols Road, without forgetting the Cerdanya and the Upper Valley of the Ter. Walkers and sports enthusiasts on the other hand will probably head for resorts such as La Molina (in Cerdayna), one of Catalunya's main ski resorts, and the Parque Nacional d'Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici with some 34 888 acres of pastures, forests, snow-capped peaks and glaciers.
