Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the largest town in the Canary Islands and one of Spain's major ports, was founded in a palm grove (hence its name) in 1478. It has two main centres: Vegueta, the old city, and Puerto de la Luz, which is focused on tourism. Between them lies the Ciudad Jardín, which fully deserves its names (“garden city”). The airport and harbour are transatlantic stopovers and bring visitors to Las Palmas all year round.
