Cartagena Travel guide
Cartagena : Michelin's recommendations
An important military port, Cartagena enjoys a remarkable location on a deep bay surrounded by headlands defended by forts. The establishment of the Escombreras refinery 9km away added to its importance. The first submarine invented in 1888 by Isaac Peral, a local resident, can be seen near the walls and Plaza del Ayuntamiento. From the top of the old Castillo de la Concepción there are fine views over the port, the harbour and the ruins of the old Romanesque cathedral.
