Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in Morocco, is the nearest African port to the Iberian Peninsula. It occupies a superb location opposite Gibraltar, at the gateway to the strait. The town was built in a remarkable setting, and its European-style buildings stand on a narrow isthmus linking Monte Hacho to the mainland. The port was taken by the Portuguese in 1415, then fell into Spanish hands in 1580, when Philip II annexed the kingdom of Portugal.
