From the Portuguese side, the town appears perched on a hill surrounded by ramparts beyond the Roman bridge spanning the Agueda. A maze of buildings lies behind its fortified gates, in which palaces, churches and monuments combine to form a magnificent architectural ensemble. Surprisingly, the town is off the beaten tourist track despite its appealing atmosphere of quiet streets providing a contrast with the lively hustle and bustle of its squares crowded with cafés and restaurants.
