Estella lies on both banks of the Ega and is divided into “parishes” that have expanded without losing their character. The elegance of its brick and stone façades is a reminder of the illustrious past of this town, chosen as a home by the kings of Navarre in the 12C. Estella was an important staging post on the Way of St James; as a result it boasts several buildings of great artistic value, mostly dating from the Romanesque period. Pilgrims came here to venerate the Virgin of the Puy.
