As a result of its strategic position near the French border, Hondarribia (Fuenterrabia), now a busy seaside resort and major fishing port, was often subject to attacks from its powerful neighbours. On the hill overlooking the River Bidassoa, the town’s old fort with its steep streets is still surrounded by ramparts. Outside the town and near the port, La Marina, a lively fishing quarter with typical wooden balconies, has a number of popular cafés.
