Built on a terrace in the Aragón valley, Jaca is overlooked by the Peña de Oroel. Its 16C citadel is well preserved and is a reminder of its strategic location in olden times. Jaca was renowned for warding off a Moorish invasion in the 8C, then became the first capital of Aragón. Today, its location at the end of the Somport pass makes it a busy transit route for tourists in summer and skiers in winter.
