An ancient stronghold claimed by both Castille and Navarre, Labastida became part of Álava in the 16C and subsequently enjoyed a period of prosperity, explaining the many fine houses and coats of arms (17C-18C) adorning its old town (Rioja’s most armigerous!), most notably on Calle Frontín and in the La Mota quarter. Delightfully situated between Mt Toloño and the plain of the Èbre, this winemaking town has aspirations to become the viticultural capital of the Rioja Alavesa region.
