One of the rare examples of Classical town planning in Spain, Lerma owes its splendour to Francisco de Sandoval, Duke of Lerma (1553-1625), the ambitious favourite of Philip III. The sober façade of the ducal palace can be admired in the Plaza Mayor, while the collegiate church contains a kneeling statue of the Duke's nephew (17C).
