The capital of the Rioja region stands on the banks of the Ebro, in a fertile valley planted with crops. The Baroque towers of the cathedral echo those of the pyramidal Santa María del Palacio, and the Mudéjar San Bartolomé, creating an impressive sight.

Occupies a fine 18C palace and stocked mainly from forced sale of ecclesiastic wares in the 19C. The Romanesque sculptures and Gothic retable by Torremuña are the most interesting pieces. Closed for restoration.

A cathedral since 1959, the church of Santa María dates back to 1435. It contains three fine aisles, three polygonal apses and chapels on the collaterals. Among the latter, note the chapel of Our Lady of Peace, in the Plateresque style.
