Situated at an altitude of 485m on the left bank of the Miño, Lugo is surrounded by its town walls. It was the capital of Gallaecia under Roman rule and an important communications hub. Currently the centre of an agricultural region (specialising in cheeses, it is a very busy town with wide shopping streets (Calle de la Reina and Plaza de Santo Domingo), but has retained its old aristocratic quarter around the cathedral.
