The Maresme coast stretches northeast of Barcelona between Montgat and the Tordera river, and is protected by a chain of mountains. Because of its pleasant climate, coastal villages such as Arenys de Mar have developed into popular resorts. The pleasant small town of Mataró has a large marina. The area's eventful history has left its mark, with traces of the Via Augusta (Roman road), castles, churches and defensive towers that bear witness to the activities of pirates here in the Middle Ages.
