The sleepy town of Oñati, set in the middle of a verdant valley, boasts palaces, convents and an old university. 6km to the east, enjoy a fine panoramic view of the town, huddled at the foot of the Aloña (1 321m), with the peaks of Udala and Amboto in the distance.

Old University
Larragna Auzoa 16 E - 20560 Oñati
Created in 1545 and closed in the early 20C. Now occupied by the administrative services of the province of Guipúzcoa. Only university in the Basque country, it was culturally prestigious. The portal and patio are interesting.

Town Hall

Fine 18C baroque building by Martín de Carrera. Strange dances and processions dating back to the 15C are held on the square on the day of Corpus Christi.

Church of San MIguel

Opposite the university, this Gothic church was transformed during the baroque period. In the left collateral, a Renaissance chapel contains an interesting gilded wooden retable and the marble tomb of the university's founder.
