North of Figueres, Peralada is situated in the middle of a landscape of vineyards whose setting belies its proximity to the sea. Within its medieval walls, the village has an impressive old quarter made up of small squares and narrow streets.

Convento del Carme

The fine Carmel , in the Catalan Gothic style, stands to the south of the ramparts. Built in the 13C, it has a fine polygon church and chapels between the buttresses (1400). The cloister, built in the 14C, is very graceful.

Museu del Castell de Peralada

Houses Gothic and Romanesque sculptures and a remarkable collection of glass an ceramics from the 16-19C. The castle library has more than 70,000 volumes, including some incunabulae, and precious editions of Don Quixote .

Cloister of Sant Domènec

This cloister is all that remains of the convent founded by the Augustines in the 11C. It is the most important Romanesque monument in the town. The iconography of the capitals - scenes from the Bible, animals - is very unusual.
