Bibendum
As you head west from Ribes de Freser, your first stop will be La Molina, one of Catalunya's most important ski resorts. The nearby village of Apt is also popular with winter and summer tourists. The tour continues to Puigcerdà. Developed on a terrace, the capital of Cerdanya is one of the most popular holiday resorts of the Pyrenees and its emblem is the bell tower, all that remains of the Gothic Iglesia de Santa María. The old-fashioned shops and balconied buildings have retained all their picturesque authenticity. From here, bear north towards Llivia, a tiny Spanish enclave in French territory. Savour the charming narrow streets, admire the ruins of a medieval castle and visit the town museum, home to the farmacia de Llivia, said to be one of the oldest chemists in Europe. Double back and take the N 260 towards the delightful village of Bellver de Cerdanya. Poised on a rocky crag dominating the Vall del Segre, the village has a fine main square with beautiful balconied stone houses and wooden porches. Continue the route to Seo de Urgel, your destination. The city of prince-bishops is home to a fine cathedral built in a French and Italian style, with 13C cloisters. The Museo Diosesano has many works including an 11C Beatus. Notice the interesting papyrus belonging to Pope Sylvester II (999-1003) and the 14C Abella de la Conca altarpiece by Pere Serra.
