Roncesvalles
: Michelin's recommendations
A border pass used in the Middle Ages by pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compostela, Roncesvalles is famous for the victory the Basques of Navarre inflicted in 778 on the rearguard of Charlemagne's army, which was returning to France on the orders of Roland. This legend was idealised on both sides of the Pyrenees, glorifying either the Basques or the Christians.
