Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the monumental city of Salamanca extends from the Roman bridge to the Puerta de Zamora.
The city is teeming with palaces and religious buildings, especially in the area around the prestigious university, whose splendid façade is an emblem of Plateresque art. Its vibrant main square (Plaza Mayor) is a scene of constant activity, thanks to its café and restaurant terraces and the frequent historical and musical shows held in its glorious evening light.
There’s always plenty to do and see in Salamanca, a large university town with many cultural attractions, even in winter - minus the multitude of summertime tourists, of course. Winter visitors will need to pack warm clothes, as the city is situated on Spain’s central plateau where the climate is continental. True, it rarely rains and the sky is likely to be Mediterranean blue, but temperatures can occasionally dip down to -10°C/ 14°F.
