San Millán de la Cogolla : Michelin's recommendations

In the 10C, a Mozarabic monastery and church (Suso) were built on the site of a hermit’s tomb, and in 1053 monks settled in the valley (Yuso). The first manuscripts in the Castilian language were written here.

Yuso Monastery

The current monastery was built from the 16-18C. The treasury contains some splendid ivories that decorated two 11C reliquaries, whose precious stones were pillaged by Napoleon's soldiers.

The Mozarabic 10C building, partly hewn from the rock, has a cubical apse with large sculpted crows. Next to the church, a necropolis of monks buried in the caves was found.
