Located close to Olot, Santa Pau is tucked away in the unusual landscapes of the Garrotxa volcanic area. Its castle overlooks a lovely arcaded square, the Firal del Bous (Cattle Mart), also fronted by the parish church of Santa María. With its charming narrow streets, the town is a pleasant place for a stroll. It’s also worth sampling the local cuisine, which enjoys an excellent reputation.

Santa Margarida Volcano

The volcano, the largest in the Garrotxa region, has a cone 110m high and a 1 200m diameter. Lush vegetation covers the rim of the crater, which is nonetheless still visible.

This delightful forest of beech trees is several thousand years old. The peace and tranquil beauty of the region’s lush scenery have inspired landscape painters from the Olot School, such as Juan Llimona, Modesto Urgall and José Berga.
