This museum is housed in the praetorium, which is also known as the "Castillo de Pilatos". The building, which occupied one end of the Roman forum, has been used for a variety of purposes in its long history: an administrative centre in the 1C BC, a royal residence in the Middle Ages, a barracks after the War of Succession, and a prison in the 19C. It became a museum in 1968, housing among other works the Hippolyte sarcophagus, a beautiful work sculpted in a Greek workshop in the 3C AD.
