The modern town hides the charm and originality of Trujillo’s old district, which lies further up the hill on a granite platform. The latter has a Moorish feel to it and was gradually “gentrified” due to residences built in the 16C-17C by “Indianos” (locals who made their fortune in Latin America). Trujillo was home to an impressive number of New World adventurers and pioneers, such as Francisco de Orellana, Diego García de Paredes, and Francisco Pizarro (1475-1541), the conqueror of Peru.
