The central Mercado, built between 1914 and 1928, is a fine example of Modernist architecture. This huge glass and metal structure houses an extremely busy morning market. The profusion of fruit and vegetables here is a good indication of the agricultural wealth of the huerta (irrigated plain). The region not only produces citrus fruits, using intensive methods, and rice, but also has a considerable amount of market gardening.
