The present 18C neo-classical cathedral replaced an 11C building, of which all that remains are the elegant bell tower and the crypt. Inside, the 15C altarpiece on the high altar and the paintings by Josep Maria Sert (1874-1945) are noteworthy. The paintings are very symbolic: the huge pictures illustrate the mystery of the Redemption, from original sin (in the transept) to the Passion of Christ (in the apse) and the martyrdom of the Apostles (in the nave).The painter's final piece, A Crucifixion, hangs in the cloisters above his tomb. The philosopher Jaume Balmes (1810-1848) is also buried here.
