Situated 5km from Figueres, Vilabertran is a tranquil village, which comes as a pleasant contrast to the busy Costa Brava. Built around an ancient Augustine monastery, it has a rural charm which is rare in the region. Its layout of unusual straight and narrow streets adds to its picturesque charm.

Church

Built in the 11-12C, this is a simple and beautiful church with three aisles. The belltower is on the right, a narrow three-storey building, with gemeled windows and decorated with Lombard bands.

Bishop's palace

This magnificent building was erected by Abbot Antonio Girgós (1410-1424). It is a remarkable example of the Gothic style with a façade pierced by a portal and delicate bay windows.

Cloister

The 12C Romanesque cloister has a trapezoid shape and is surrounded by 12-14C monastery outhouses. Built according to the architectural standards of Cîteaux, it is austere in character, fitting for prayer.
