Viso del Marqués
: Michelin's recommendations
This unassuming town is the backdrop for the sumptuous Palace of El Viso del Marqués, built in 1564 for Philip II’s admiral Álvaro de Bazán, Marquess of Santa Cruz. Built by the Italian architect Battista Castello (known as “Il Bergamasco”). Its austere façade belies an interior decorated with over 8 000m2 of frescoes depicting the admiral’s great victories and the 1581 annexation of Portugal by Philip II. The remains of Álvaro de Bazán were laid to rest in the palace’s little chapel.
