The 12C polychrome wood statue of a Black Madonna, known as La Moreneta to Catalans, is displayed in the church at Montserrat. According to legend she was found in a mountain cave by shepherds. She can now be seen above the high altar, in a niche accessed from one of the lower chapels on the right-hand side of the church, and receives a steady flow of pilgrims. The services held by the monks here are of great beauty, in particular those at Christmas and Easter.
