The Cistercian monastery between Santo Domingo de la Calzada and Nájera was founded in 1170 and is still home to members of the order. The 16C church and chapterhouse are extraordinary examples of the purity of Cistercian art. The simplicity of the place, barely broken by discreet floral decoration, gives a great sense of spirituality. A small museum on the Cistercian Order and its centres in Spain has been set up in the former granary.
