The Costa Verde west of Gijon

The Costa Verde west of Gijon

By car, 144 km, 1 day

The Costa Verde, one of the most beautiful coasts in Spain, owes its name to the colour of the sea and its shores green with eucalyptus and pine trees. You'll be enchanted by the landscape between Gijon and Ría de Ribadeo, full of cliffs, sandy beaches, creeks and little fishing harbours (like Luarca). In addition, the coast has the Cantabrian mountains and the Picos de Europa as a stunning backdrop, which you can admire from a natural viewpoint such as Cape Vidio.

At the end of the road that winds through the moors, Cabo Vidio commands a breathtaking spectacle. Its sheer cliffs loom 100m above the waves and the swell thrashes about below. Near the lighthouse, the panoramic view unfolds to the right toward the Cabo de Peñas and to the left towards Cabo Busto.

The Eo estuary, whose last kilometers form the border between Galicia and Asturias. After a tumultuous course, the river settles down. A fine view can be enjoyed from the bridge over the ria's mouth.
