This tour goes southeast via Avissawella, through every shade and tone of rich green to yellow green of the rubber plantations, paddy fields and tea estates. Before reaching Ratnapura, you will visit the Bopath Ella water falls with a height of approximately 100 feet or 30 meters. The name Bopath Ella has been derived from its heart like structured head, resembling a Bo leaf of the sacred Bo tree. Further toward Ratnapura, (also known as the City of Gems) we will see Adam's Peak (in the distance), a 2,243 meter mountain venerated by Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims.
After lunch, we will visit one of the famous gem mines of Ratnapura. Gems such as the Blue, Star and Yellow Sapphires, Cat's Eyes, Rubies, Alexandrites, Amethysts, Zircons, Topaz and Tourmalines are found here. There will be an opportunity to watch a gem cutter and polisher at work and also visit at a lapidary.
The last stop will be at the Saman Devala, an important shrine for Budhists. It is a shrine devoted to Saman, a Buddhist deity who is regarded as the guardian of Ratnapura. The temple which stands here was rebuilt after the Kandyan kingdom after Ratnapura was recaptured from the Portuguese, who destroyed it previously.
