Bellinzona
: Michelin's recommendations
Bellinzona is an inevitable point of passage for transalpine traffic taking the routes through St Gothard, Lukmanier or San Bernardino on the Italian side of the Alps. It has gone from being a thousand-year-long stronghold defending Tessin to being the canton's administrative capital (since 1803). But contrary to appearances there is nothing austere about this Lombardic town. The authentic, bustling market, as well as the region's most lively carnival, should certainly be able to convince you.
