Glaris, at the foot of the Vorder Glärnisch cliffs, is a busy town built according to a regular plan. It lies in the only Swiss mountain industrial canton (textile). The great Landsgemeinde referendum has been held here on every first Sunday in May since 1387 and is an example of the canton's direct democracy.
