La Chaux-de-Fonds, set in a high Jura valley. is Switzerland's premier clockmaking centre and one of its main agricultural towns. It was almost totally destroyed by a fire in 1797, then rebuilt according to a geometrical plan. It is the birthplace of several famous people, including the car manufacturer Louis Chevrolet, writer Blaise Cendras and architect Le Corbusier, but is mainly known as the birthplace of the clockmaking industry.
