At the foot of the last Jura foothills, Soleure extends today from one side to the other of the Aare. Beautiful Renaissance and Baroque edifices still stand in the old town, still surrounded by its 17C walls, on the river's left bank. From 1530 to 1792 the town, Catholic, was the residence of the King of France's ambassadors to the Swiss Diet, which favoured its intellectural and artistic development.
