Isolated by the depression which supplies water to the lakes of Lucerne, Zoug and Lauerz, the 1 797m-high Rigi has rugged wooded slopes punctuated by reddish escarpments. Its highest peak, Rigi-Kulm, is famous for its alpine sunrises. Arriving at the rack railway station, head to the signal and the cross, from where the view takes in a swathe of the Alps from Säntis to the Jungfrau via the Glaris and Uri Alps and the Titlis massif.
