The Orthodox church of St George has a unique pavement, discovered during its construction in 1896 on the site of a Byzantine basilica. Originally covering 15.7m by 5.6m, it comprised over 2 million tesserae. Although damaged, the surviving section representing a map of the Holy Land is a remarkable document allowing historians to better understand 6C Middle Eastern geography. Greek inscriptions identify 127 cities, all oriented eastwards.
