The monastery stands on the site where Lot and his daughters sought refuge after God’s destruction of Sodom. The Bible recounts the cataclysm which befell the city and its neighbour Gomorrah in the 19C BC, God’s punishment upon their morally corrupt inhabitants. The Byzantine monastery overlooks the Dead Sea. It comprises of a church with mosaic floor, monastic quarters and funerary chambers. The cave behind the church has also yielded finds dating back to 3 000 BC.
