Lot's Monastery : Michelin's recommendations

The monastery is said to stand on the site where Lot and his daughters sought refuge after God's destruction of Sodom. The Bible describes the cataclysm which befell the city - located on the Israeli shore - and its neighbour Gomorrah in the 19C BC, as a punishment God wrought upon their morally corrupt inhabitants. The Byzantine monastery overlooks the Dead Sea. It comprises a church with mosaic flooring, monastic quarters and funerary chambers. The cave behind the church has also yielded finds dating back to 3 000 BC.
